"As viscous as motor oil swirled in a swamp, redolent of burnt bell peppers nested in by incontinent mice and a finish reminiscent of the dregs of a stale can of Coca-Cola that someone has been using as an ashtray. Not a bad drink, though."--Excerpt from "The Moose Turd Wine Tasting" by T. A. Nonymous

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 cups buttermilk
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup flour
1 cup white cornmeal

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all of the above ingredients together and stir until well blended. Preheat the oven to 400. It's best to use a cast iron skillet for this corn bread recipe. Put the skillet into the oven to preheat. When it's hot, add 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil and put it back into the oven to be sure the oil is hot. Remove the pan from the oven and pour the mixture all at once into the hot pan. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 minutes. The bread will be golden brown and crispy and still moist inside. If you want it drier inside, cook for a few more minutes.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
I wrote this recipe after watching my mother, Cathyrine Maze, prepare this many times for my dad, Norman, and our family of girls. Mom never used a recipe and I really needed to know how to prepare this treat. I watched carefully and measured her ingredients.
This recipe is moist, tender, and crispy all at once. It's so good at bringing back memories of dinner at home with the family.
