Ruth Tefft's Date Squares

2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup sugar
pinch salt
Mix these together and then cut in with knife 1/2 cup Crisco and rub the Crisco in well with hands. Add 1 beaten egg with 1/2 tsp vanilla and 2 tbs milk. Mix well with fork. Put half in pan--then filling--sprinkle rest of mixture over top.
Date Filling:
8 oz. pkg dates--cut up
In measuring cup put 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tsp. flour and mix together, then fill cup with cold water. Boil with dates for a few minutes until filling thickens. Let cool before using. Squash filling with fork.

You can also use raspberry or apricot jam as filling, 2/3 to 3/4 jar of jam (12 oz.) or even jig jam.

Bake 350 for 20 minutes, until just light brown.

Use 8" or 9" square pan.
