3/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 1/4 c. flour, sifted
2 tsps. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger

Preheat oven to 350F. In a mixing bowl, combine shortening, brown sugar, egg, and molasses. Sift together the flour, soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger. Combine with the molasses mixture. Chill the dough for at least 1 hour. Roll into balls the size of walnuts. Dip the tops in sugar and place sugar side up on a greased cookie sheet, about 3 inches apart. Sprinkle cookie with a few drops of water to produce a crackled surface. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
