4 c. milk
2 T. butter
2 c. bread crumbs or cubed bread
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375F. Scald milk and butter. Soak the bread in milk then add sugar, salt, vanilla, and slightly beaten egg (optional: may add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg). Stir until sugar is dissolved then pour mixture into a buttered baking dish. Place dish in a pan of hot water (a water bath, about 2 inches deep). Bake until set or knife comes out clean.
