1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
6-10 drops red food coloring
3 T. butter
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening,
1/2 c. milk
6 medium apples, cored and chopped
6-7 small cinnamon candies for each dumpling

Preheat oven to 375. Combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg and food coloring in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil. Add butter. Allow to cool slightly and add apples. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until flour is moistened. On lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/8". Cut into 6 squares. Place apple mixture, divided equally into each square. Put cinnamon candies on top of apples mixture. Dot with butter. Bring each corner up to center and pinch ends and edges together. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 35 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm, over ice cream.
