1 c sugar
c Crisco
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp vinegar
2 c sifted cake flour
2 Tbsp cocoa
1 c buttermilk
1 oz red food coloring
1 oz water
1 Tbsp soda

Directions:
Directions:
Mix sugar & Crisco. Add eggs and vanilla. Add flour and cocoa and 2/3 cup buttermilk & red food coloring & water. Beat for 1 minute. Add other 1/3-cup buttermilk and dissolve soda in vinegar and add with buttermilk. Put in 2 round greased & floured cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn out layers and cool. Icing: Beat with mixer until thick & creamy. Spread between layers and sides & top. Icing: Mix 1 c of milk, 1/4 cup of flour, 1/8 tsp of salt. Cook until thick. Cool. Add 1-cup sugar, 1 c of butter and 1 tsp of vanilla.This is what I always wanted for my Birthday when growing up, and still do.
