2/3 cup shortening
1 3/4 tsp baking soda
1 1/4 cups white sugar
1 1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cloves
3 eggs
3/4 tsp all-spice
1 3/4 cups thick applesauce
1/4 tsp nutmeg
3 cups all purpose flour
1 3/4 tsp salt
1/3 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup water
1 1/2 cups raisins or dates
1 1/2 cups broken walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs. Add applesauce and mix well. Stir sifted dry ingredients into mixture, alternating with water. Blend fruit and nuts into the batter. Pour into a greased and floured 9" X 13" pan and bake at 350F for 55 - 60 minutes. Cool and frost.
