2 oz butter or margarine 2 large yellow or white onions 2 pints of beef stock or broth Sliced French bread Grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese Salt and pepper
Slice onions thinly and sauté in butter, add the stock and simmer for about 30 minutes and season with salt and pepper to taste. Meanwhile, sprinkle cheese bread slices and brown under a hot broiler. Put bread in the bottom of soup bowls and pour soup on top
