Make strong brine. Cut cucumbers in chunks. Place in brine for 3 days. Pour this off and add fresh water daily for 3 days. Drain off and add a little more then a pint vinegar, 1-1/2 quarts water and alum the size of a walnut. Simmer on stove 2 hours but not boil. Drain off and place pickles in jars and cover with syrup made as follows: 1 quart vinegar, 5 cups sugar, 1 tablespoon allspice, whole stick cinnamon (broken in pieces). Bring to boil and pour over pickles and seal.
