2 cups sifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg
2/3 cups milk
TOPPING
1-1/2 cups thinly sliced apples
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons soft butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Sift dry ingredients into a bowl. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender. Add egg and milk stirring only until all the flour is moistening. Spread batter in greased 9 inch square pan. Arrange apple slices on top of batter. Mix other ingredients together and sprinkle over apples. Bake in a moderately hot oven (400) 25 - 30 minutes. Serve warm as a coffee cake or as dessert.
