1/2 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2oz. red food coloring
2 T. cocoa
2 1/4 c. cake flour (sifted) OR
2 c. minus 4 T. all purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 T. vinegar

Mix vinegar and soda in small cup and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar until creamy. Add eggs and beat well. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt together and add alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Stir in soda-vinegar and mix well. Pour batter into two greased and floured layer cake pans. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool before frosting.
