3 c. sifted cake flour
2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
1 slightly beaten egg
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. chopped nuts
sweetened whipped cream or peach cream filling.
Filling:
1/2 pt. heavy cream
1/2 c. mashed peaches
1 T. lemon juice
2 T. sugar
sliced peaches

Directions:
Directions:
Combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add shortening and blend with pastry blender until crumbly. Set aside 1 c. of this mixture. Combine egg, milk, and soda. Add to dry ingredients; stir well. Pour into 2 paper-lined greased 9" pans. Sprinkle the 1 c. crumb mixture combined with nuts over top of each layer. Bake in 375 F for 25-30 minutes. Serve with sweetened whipped cream or peach cream filling between layers.
Peach Cream Filling: Combine whipped cream, mashed peaches, lemon juice, and sugar. Place between torte layers. Garnish with sliced peaches. Serve immediately. (May substitute strawberries for peaches.)
