MIX ingredients in bowl and stir till blended. Set aside, to add after last addition of flour:

c. cocoa
1 tsp. soda
c. boiling water



Beat until well blended:

3/4 c. shortening
1 3/4 c. sugar
tsp. salt
2 eggs, beaten well after each addition.
2 c. all-purposed flour
1 1/4 c. thick buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar, shortening and salt together until very smooth. Add eggs, beating well after each addition. Add buttermilk and vanilla. Mix in flour, if too stiff, add a bit more buttermilk. Finally, add the cocoa mixture, mix well. Pour into two well greased 9X 6 pan or three round cake pans. Bake for first 15 minutes a @ 400 then turn oven to 375 finish baking for 10-15 minutes.
