Many ingredients so just follow the directions.

Thoroughly cream together 3 T. shortening and 3/4 c. sugar.
Sift together l c. flour, l 1/2 tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt. Add to the creamed mixture, alternately, with 1/2 C. milk, stirring after each addition to blend well. Fold in 1/2 c. chopped pecans. Turn into ungreased 8 x 8x 2 pan.

Mix together l c. dark brown sugar and l c. cocoa (Dutch process) plus 1/4 tsp. salt. Sprinkle over top of the batter in the pan. Have ready l C. boiling water. Pour over whole works. Do not stir in!!!

It will look like a grand mess. Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm or cold with whipped cream.

This is certainly different from the normal cake. I received this recipe when I was first married from my sister-in-law in Ohio, who made it for many parties.
