2 c. flour
1 1/2 t. soda
2 c. sugar
1 t. salt
2 sticks butter
4 T. cocoa (heaping)
1 c. water
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 t. vanilla

ICING:
1 stick butter
4 T. cocoa
6 T. buttermilk (1/3 cup)
1 lb. powdered sugar
1 c. walnuts, chopped
1 t. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together the flour, soda, sugar, and salt. Set aside. In a saucepan, melt the butter and add the cocoa,and water. Bring to a boil. Pour over the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, unbeaten eggs and vanilla. Beat 2 minutes by hand with a wire whisp. Pour into a greased 11x7 jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes.
Start the icing 5 minutes before cake (bars) are done.
ICING:
Melt butter in a saucepan and add cocoa and buttermilk. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar, nuts and vanilla. Spread on warm cake.

This is called a cake, yet is baked in a jelly roll pan, so to me it has always been a bar recipe (brownie). This is probably the best brownie recipe I have ever made! It is so forgiving in throwing it together. Can be litterly put together at the last minute and can be ready to serve within 30 minutes of putting it into the oven, because it can be frosted right after coming from the oven.
**NOTE: the buttermilk in the frosting gives this a wonderful new and different flavor. Everyone enjoys it!
