1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. light brown sugar, packed
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 egg
salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
7 1/4 oz. dates
1 c. nuts, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter. Add brown sugar, butter, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla, and egg. Beat until light. Add sifted dry ingredients. Chill until firm enough to roll.

To make filling:
Cut dates into small pieces. Bring to boil with remaining 1/4 cup sugar, dash of salt and 1/3 cup water. Simmer 5 minutes, stirring often. Add nuts. Cool.

Halve dough. Roll each half, on floured wax paper, into 9 x 12 inch rectangle. Spread filling onto dough and roll up tightly from end. Wrap in paper; chill overnight.

Slice roll 1/8 inch thick. Bake in moderate oven at 375º for 10 minutes.
