1 cup sugar
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup molasses
1 egg

4 - 5 cups flour
4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
¾ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp salt

Directions:

Mix well the first 4 ingredients in a large bowl.

In another bowl sift all the remaining ingredients

Beat all ingredients together.

Add alternately with 2/3 cup HOT water. May have to add more flour to mox so it can be rolled out. canbe rolled out immediately or chill dough for a few hours up to overnight so cookies will be chewy & soft.

Roll out to 1/4 " thick then cut with floured cookie cutter & place on lightly greased cookie sheet.

Bake @ 350 for about 7 minutes.
Remove from cookie sheet right away & cool on a rack or cloth.
