1/4 cup shortening or butter (I like butter)
2 cups plain cornmeal
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 tsp baking soda
2 cups buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º.

Place baking pan in oven; add shortening or butter and melt.

In a large mixing bowl, sift cornmeal, flour, sugar and salt.

In small bowl, combine baking soda and buttermilk; stir into the dry ingredients until combined. Add melted shortening or butter; stir to combine.

Pour the batter into the hot pan and back until golden brown, about 50-60 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven, transfer to cooling rack and cool before cutting.
