4 c. milk or light cream
1/2 c. dry bread crumbs
1/2 onion stuck with 6 cloves
Parsley sprig
1/2 bay leaf
2 tsp. sugar
2 c. chopped fresh or canned tomatoes
1/4 tsp. baking soda
4 T. butter
Salt and pepper

Directions:
Directions:
Put the milk in a pot and add the bread crumbs, onion and cloves, parsley, bay leaf and sugar. Simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes; remove from heat and discard the onion with cloves and the bay leaf. Add tomatoes and baking soda. Simmer for about 15 minutes. Puree in a food processor or blender. Return mixture to the pot, add the butter; salt and pepper to taste. Reheat, stirring until the butter melts and the soup is very hot.
