1 cup dates,chopped
2 cups hot water
2 tsp. baking soda

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Bring first 3 ingredients to a boil; then let cool.
Cream together sugar, eggs, shortening and vanilla.
Sift flour and salt together.
Mix sifted ingredients into boiled dates; alternating with creamed mixture.
Add chopped walnuts

Bake 350º for 45 to 50 minutes. Use angel food cake ring or bundt pan.
