Ingredients:  
Combine the following ingredients:
1 package pitted dates (1 pound if not pitted)
2 cups boiling water
2 level teaspoons of baking soda
1/4 cup shortening
2 teaspoons salt

Add the following
2 scant cups of sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
4 to 5 cups flour sifted with:
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup of walnut meats (optional)

Directions:

Bake one hour at 350º or until a toothpick comes out clean in the center.

I would grease the loaf pans. (Ann)
