Ingredients:
Ingredients:
3-5 pounds green beans (half runners or pole beans are my favorite)
4-6 slices thick bacon
1 medium onion
Pinch of sugar
Salt to taste

Directions:
Directions:
Cook bacon, drain into a small bowl and set aside.
Break the beans into bite-size pieces, make sure to remove all strings. Rinse thoroughly. Place in a large pot, cover beans about half way with water. Add a pinch of sugar, slice the onion and put on top of beans, add bacon grease, put bacon on top. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and allow to boil gently. Let cook for about an hour, check water level occasionally - don't let them boil dry! Cook to desired tenderness. Add salt to taste...I like salt so I use a more than I should 😀
