Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 c. granulated sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. sour milk or buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
4 1/2 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix the sugar, shortening and eggs thoroughly. Add, alternately, the sifted dry ingredients with the sour milk. Roll to desired thickness, cut into rounds, top with a sprinkling of granulated sugar and bake in a 375º oven for eight to 10 minutes.

Vary the flour measurements slightly according to the size of the eggs and the degree of moisture given off by the milk or buttermilk. Just add enough flour so that the dough can be rolled out. Chilling for a short time will aid in the rolling process.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This recipe was copied from a Carlisle Sentinel newspaper clipping from July 30, 1966. Grandma was baking cookies for the Young Women's Christian Association for sale days and was interviewed for the "In My Neighbor's Kitchen" column. Her picture was included with the article. She said the recipe came from her husband's mother, the late Mrs. Sharp Clippinger.
