"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain
This recipe for Tomatoes, Bill's Fried Green, by Beulah Massey, is from The Marley Family Cookbook #2,
one of the cookbooks created at FamilyCookbookProject.com. We help
families or individuals create heirloom cookbook treasures.
4 medium green tomatoes 1 whole egg 1/3 cup milk 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup all-purpose flour Salt & pepper to taste
Wash (with water) & dry (with paper towels) the tomatoes; slice them into 1/4 inch thick slices. Combine the egg and milk in a medium sized bowl. Combine the cornmeal, flour, salt and pepper in another medium sized bowl. Dredge the tomato slices into the egg mixture then into the flour mixture. Completely coat the slices when coating them in each of the coatings; allow them to drip off any excess. Fry the coated tomato slices in 365 degree oil. Fry them until they've browned on both sides. Drain them on paper towels.
To make fried okra, use okra slices instead of green tomatoe slices.
