2 cups brown sugar
2 1/4 cup of flour
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup walnuts (opt)
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 beaten egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves.

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together sugar, flour and salt. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Take out 3/4 of a cup to reserve for topping.
To the remainder add raisins and walnuts. Stir soda into the buttermilk, add egg and vanilla. stir into flour mixture, mix until well blended. pour into greased 9 inch square cake pan and bake at 325 for 50-60 min or till knife comes out clean.

Mom used to make this often it was a real hit. My children loved it too. Glenn got the recipe from her when he was going to school in Spiritwood and submitted it in the Heartly Clarke School cook book.
