1 c. dark brown sugar, packed
1 stick butter, softened
2 T. light corn syrup (Karo)
12 slices firm white bread, no crusts
1-1/2 c. milk
6 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
Whipped cream, sweetened
Fresh berries

Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish.

Combine sugar, butter and corn syrup in a medium saucepan. Slowly bring to a bowl, while stirring. Pour into the baking dish and spread evenly. Cool.
Arrange 6 slices of bread in the baking dish to make a single layer; cover with a 2nd layer of bread slices.

Whisk milk, eggs, vanilla and salt until blended. Pour over bread. Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight or for at least 6 hours.

Bake at 350 F. for about 40 minutes until bread is puffed and light golden brown. Allow to rest for 10 minutes and then cut into 8 portions. Top with whipped cream and berries.

I like to use fresh blueberries and strawberries and serve on a Patriotic holiday. It can be made a day ahead and baked just before serving.
