3/4 c shortening
1 1/4 c boiling water
2 cups chopped dates
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp cocoa
Topping:
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
6 oz chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
Pour boiling water over dates in small bowl, set aside till cool. Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and beat well. Sift flour with soda, salt and cocoa. Add to shortening mixture alternately with date mixture. (adding dry ingredients first and last.) Pour batter in greased pan. 17 1/2 x 11 x 1.(cookie sheet) Mix topping and sprinkle over top and bake 35 minutes in 350 oven.

This is an excellent lunch cake. Easy and very good. Our family received this recipe from Henrietta Timmers, an absolutely awesome cook. (I of course got the recipe from Mom.)
