1 lb fresh or frozen String Beans, cut in half
½ lb cubed lamb (or substitute beef—or you can leave the meat out)
2T olive oil
1 onion halved and sliced
1 15 oz. can diced tomatoes
1T tomato paste
1t salt
½ t allspice
½ t basil
Dash of hot sauce or pinch of cayenne

Brown meat in large skillet. Add onions and cook a bit more. Add beans and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until meat is tender. Serve with Lebanese Rice Pilaf (recipe in book).

This is a family favorite. It can be made as a vegetarian dish as well, just omit the meat and reduce cooking time to 45 minutes. If so, it would be known as Loubieh b'Zayt (beans with tomatoes). Enjoy!
