5 c. flour
1 c. butter
1 c. molasses
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 c. sour or buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in boiling water
1 1/2 tsp. ginger
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs (beaten)
1/2 lb. raisins (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Stir together in a medium bowl the butter, sugar, molasses, and spices to a light cream and set aside to return to room temperature.
Once warmed, add the milk to the mixture, then the beaten eggs, baking soda, and lastly the flour (first add 4 cups of flour, and if needed to make thicker, add the rest).
Beat very hard for ten minutes. If desired, add 1/2 lb. raisins, seeded and cut in half, dredged in flour, to the mixture.
Pour batter into a loaf, or in small tins, and bake at 350ºF for 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when stuck in bread.
When done, remove from oven and let cool.

Makes about 10 rations (cut into small slices)
