Ingredients:
Ingredients:
5 cups flour (unbleached)
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. salt
1-1 1/4 cups water

Directions:
Directions:
In a bowl, combine the ingredients and kneed to form a stiff, but not dry dough; dough should be pliable, but not stick a lot to your hands (add more flour if necessary).
Fully flatten dough out onto a greased cookie sheet or really shallow pan with sides by rolling into flat sheet about 1/2 inch thick.
Using a bread knife, divide dough into 3x3 squares.
Then take a nail and poke a 3x3 matrix of holes into the surface of the dough, all the way thru, at even intervals.
Bake in oven for about 20 min. or until lightly browned. Take out and let cool.

Makes enough to fill 1 haversack.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is probably the most widely used food eaten during the Civil War, and probably the most hated.

Warning: Once stale will turn into a brick. To soften, soak in soup or coffee before eating.
