Combine, let come to a boil then cool:
4 cups Sugar
1/2 Salt
1 qt. vinegar
1 pt. water

Put 4 slices of onion in bottom of quart jar then add pickles that have been cut lengthwise. Pour cooled ingredients over pickles then add to each jar;
1/8 tsp. Alum
1/2 tsp. Celery Seed
1/2 tsp. Dill Seed

This is the recipe as Grandma wrote it for me. (She didn't indicate the amount of salt, but I'm fairly sure she meant 1/2 cup). Seal the jars and store in the refrigerate.
