1 c. sugar
2/3 c. shortening
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

Cream sugar and shortening.
Add egg and molasses.
Beat well.
Add dry ingredients.
Shape into 1 in. balls.
Dip in sugar and bake 10-12 minutes at 375º F.

I loved these when Mom made them, especially when they cooled and were chewy. I liked them so much that I entered them in a Christmas cookie contest in college. Unfortunately, I misread 3 tsp. baking soda for 3 T. Need I say I didn't win, but still got third. I guess college cooks aren't the greatest.
