Filling - 1 c. chopped dates
1 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
2 tbs flour
few grains salt
1 tbs. lemon juice
Cook dates and water to a soft paste about 5 minutes. Mix sugar, flour and salt, add all at once and cook, stirring until thickened. Stir in lemon juice. Let cool while mixing crumbly "dough.
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sifted flour
2/3 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1-1/4 c. uncooked rolled oats
1/2 tsp. salt

Directions:

Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy; add flour sifted with salt and baking powder. Stir in rolled oats, and mix well. Pat half the mixture firmly into 9" square pan. Spread date filling over this layer; then the remaining crumb mix over the dates and pat smooth. Bake in oven (350º) about 30 minutes. Mark into small squares while warm, leave in pan.
