3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup maraschino cherries, chopped
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cream of tarter
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
2 cup sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together shortening, vanilla, brown sugar & eggs in mixing bowl. Beat thoroughly. Add nuts and cherries and mix. Sift flour, baking soda, cream of tarter & salt. Divide in 2 portions. Add 1/2 to first mixture, mix well. Add remaining half, beat thoroughly. Knead dough with hands until smooth. Pack very firmly & shape in 2 bars (2x2 inches square) Wrap in wax paper. Chill in refrigerator until firm.
Cut in 1/8 inch slices, place in ungreased baking sheet & bake in hot oven. 400º 6 to 8 minutes. Makes 60 cookies.
