1 c. sugar 1/2 c. butter 1 egg 1/2 c. mild 3 1/2 c. flour 2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp.baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, cream of tartar and baking soda. Cream together sugar and butter. Add egg. Add flour mixture and milk alternately. Roll thin 1/8 thick and fill with raisin, date or jelly filling. Raisin (or date ) filling: 2 c. chopped raisins (dates) 1 c. sugar 6 tsp. flour. Mix well with 1 c. cold water. Bring to boil and continue cooking until thick. Put small tsp. on each cookie and cover with another cookie. Brush lightly with milk and sprinkle with sugar on top. Bake at 400º

I always remember that Grammy Howard would make these cookies at Christmas. Grandma Depuy traditionally made these at Christmas too. She also filled them with peanut butter for Grandpa.
