1 cup sugar
1 large tbsp shortening
1 c milk
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
Flour (about 1 1/2 cups)
Dash of salt

If making coffee cake:
nutmeg and cinnamon/sugar mixture

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all ingredients, adding flour until pouring consistency. Pour in 7 x 9 greased pan. Bake 375 until set. Ice with your choice of icing when cool.
If making a coffee cake add dash of nutmeg to batter and sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar mix before baking.

Mom made this as an iced cake for dessert or even better - for a warm coffee cake in the morning. Just sprinkle the top with cinnamon/sugar mix before baking. Makes crispy cinnamon crust on top. Great while still warm
