1/2 lb dates cut up
1 c boiling water
1 tsp soda - soak all ingredients and let cool

Cream together
2 T shortening
1 c sugar
1 egg
Add to cooled dates

Add 1 1/2 c sifted flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 /2 c nuts

Bake 30 minutes at 350

1/2 lb dates
1 c sugar
3/4 c boiling water
soak till thick
Spread over cake while still warm.
