1 cup soft shortening
2 eggs
2 cups light brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
3 1/2 cups of plain sifted flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
2 cups candied cherries
2 cups (1 lb.) dates

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, add eggs. Mix well, add milk. Sift soda, salt and flour together, then add to sugar mixture and mix well. Add cherries, dates that have been chopped and dusted with flour to prevent sticking. Add chopped pecans, mix well. Drop on cookie sheet. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
