1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1/4 cup red food coloring
1 tbsp vanilla flavoring
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 tbsp vinegar or apple cider
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp.baking soda

5 tbsp. flour
1 cup sweet milk
1 cup oleo
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to shortening mixture. Mix vanilla flavoring with buttermilk. Add alternately with flour. Mix soda, vinegar together and fold into batter. Preheat oven to 350. Bake in two 9" pans, for 30 minutes.

Icing: Make stiff paste of flour and sweet milk. Cook on low until real thick, stirring constantly. Cool thoroughly. Cream butter and sugar, then mix with flour and milk. Add vanilla, then beat until like whipped cream.
