"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
one loaf French bread (day old is best)
1 quart whole milk
3 eggs
2 c. sugar
2 T. vanilla extract
1 c. raisins
3 T. melted butter

Whiskey sauce:
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
2 ounces bourbon whiskey

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Blend together all other ingredients except butter in a large bowl (it's going to get messy). Tear bread into pieces and soak in milk (this is the messy part - mix together with your hands to be sure all bread is thoroughly soaked with liquid mixture). Pour melted butter into the bottom of a heavy 9 x 14 inch baking pan (or equal measure). Pour in the bread/liquid mixture. Bake for 40 minutes or until very firm. Make whiskey sauce while pudding is baking. Mix butter and sugar together and heat slowly until melted together (keep stirring - don't let it burn). Let it cool till warm and add the well-beaten egg and bourbon and blend together. Keep it warm until ready to serve with pudding. After pudding has baked, let cool for 20 minutes. Pour whiskey sauce all over top and serve.
