1 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts

1/3 c. butter or other shortening
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Sift together flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Add chopped nuts. Melt butter(shortening) in saucepan; remove from heat. Add brown sugar; mix well (if vegetable shortening was used, now add 1 tbsp hot water). Cool slightly. Add beaten egg and vanilla, then add flour mixture a small amount at a time. Mix well after each addition. Spread in greased 9x9x2 inch pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top. Bake in moderate oven @ 350 fro 20 - 25 minutes. Cool in pan.
