1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp peppermint extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
red food coloring

Topping: 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup crushed candy canes

Directions:
Directions:
1) Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add egg, vanilla and peppermint extract.
2) In separate bowl, mix flour, and salt. Slowly mix in with creamed ingredients.
3) Separate dough in half. Add 3/4 tsp. red food coloring to one half of dough. Add 3/4 tsp water to the other half.
4) Take a tbsp. of each dough and roll them into separate, long thin strips, then braid the two together to form a candy cane shape.
5) Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes.
6) Sprinkle topping on cookies right after removing from oven.

The smaller you can crush the candy canes for the topping, the better it will stick to the cookies.
