1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
4 egg yolks
5 Tbsp. milk
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla

Torte Filling
1 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 heaping Tbsp. cornstarch
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter, adding sugar and egg yolks. Beat until fluffy. Add milk and vanilla, mixing well. Add flour and baking powder, blend well. Spread in 2 greased and floured 8 or 9 inch layer pans.
Beat egg whites until stiff. Add 1 cup of sugar gradually. Spread on top of cake batter. Sprinkle with sliced almonds or coconut. Bake in slow oven 325 degrees 30 to 35 minutes until egg whites are very light tan. Loosen and carefully remove from pans. Invert one torte on cake plate, other on rack. Cool, fill and serve.

For filling, combine sugar and cornstarch, slowly stirring in egg, milk and vanilla. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick. Cool and spread on torte.
