1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1-1/4 c. molasses
2 eggs slightly beaten
5 to 5-1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. ground cloves

Melt shortening, cool slightly. Add sugar, molasses, and eggs; mix well. Sift flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Add shortening mixture and mix well. Chill if dough is too sticky. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick and cut with cookie cutters. Bake 7-10 minutes at 375.
