1/2 c soft shortening (1/2 butter)
1/4 brown sugar (packed)
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 c flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg white
3/4 c finely chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla throughly. Blend flour and salt, stir in. Roll tsp dough into balls. Dip into egg white and roll into finely chopped walnuts. Place 1" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet, press thumb gently into centers. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350. Cool fill holes with a sparking jelly like grape or seedless raspberry jelly, or tinted confectioners sugar icing. See bon bon cookie recipe.

Mom made these as is. I like to had lemon flavoring to yellow icing, mint flavoring to the green icing, and raspberry flavoring to the pink icing.
