1/2 c soft butter
3/4 c powdered sugar
1 tbsp vanilla
food coloring if desired
1 & 1/2 c flour
1/8 tsp salt
filling, candied cherries or very well drained maraschino cherries, nut or chocolate pieces.

Directions:
Directions:
Mix butter, sugar, vanilla and food coloring throughly. Blend in flour and salt. If dough is dry add 1 or 2 tbsp cream, or milk Wrap a level tbsp of dough around filling. Place 1" apart on ungreased. Bake 12 to 15 minutes. Cool Dip tops of cookies in Icing. Decorate

To make chocolate dough blend in 1 sq of unsweetened chocolate.
Icing:
Mix 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 tbsp cream or milk, 1 tsp vanilla and food coloring.(Mom used red and green to make a light pink frosting and a light green frosting, then sprinkle with colored sugar, coconut, or chopped nuts.

Mom was a great baker at Christmas time. Like her mother she had large cookie tins that she filled with cookies, and loaves of breads in the freezer, ready to thaw and serve.
