3/4 c soft shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 c molasses
2 &1/4 c sifted flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening and molasses mixture throughly.
Add flour sifted with spices and baking soda and stir into molasses mixture.
Chill dough. roll into balls the size of a large walnut. dip tops in sugar.Place sugared side up. 3" inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with cookie with 2 to 3 drops of water to produce a cracked surface. Bake until just set , but not hard.
