4-6 medium apples (shredded)
2 eggs
2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
1 c. nuts (chopped) (optional)
1 c. raisins (optional)
2 1/3 c. flour
1 t. salt
2 t. baking soda
1 t. nutmeg
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. cloves (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix sugar and shortening until smooth. Add eggs and mix well. Sift and mix dry ingredients in separate bowl. Add to batter alternately with grated apples. When well mixed, add raisins and nuts if desired. Bake in greased 9x13 inch pan at 350 for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Test with toothpick. Good served with cool whip or ice cream or drizzle with frosting when still warm.
