Cookie Base:
2 cups finely crushed vanilla wafers
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted


Toffee Layer: 3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar


Topping: 12 oz pkg semi sweet chocolate morsels
1 cup finely chopped nuts

BASE: preheat oven to 350. In bowl, combine wafer crumbs and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Stir in melted butter. Press into 13X9 baking pan. Bake 8 minutes.

TOFFEE: in saucepan combine butter and 3/4 cup brown sugar. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil; boil 1 minute. Pour immediately over baked base. Bake additional 10 minutes at 350. Let cool 2 minutes before adding topping.

TOPPING: sprinkle chocolate morsels on top and let stand until morsels are shiny and soft, approximately 2 minutes, then spread evenly. Sprinkle with chopped nuts and press lightly into the chocolate with the back of a spoon. Chill. Cut into small bars (they are very rich) or break into irregular pieces. Makes about 3 dozen bars.
