1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. salt
2 1/4 . flour
2 tsp. cocoa
1 c. buttermilk

3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. butter

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Add cocoa and food coloring. Add buttermilk with salt alternately with flour. Add vanilla, vinegar and soda.

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes in 2 (9-in.) pans.

FROSTING: Cook flour and milk until thick. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Blend with cooled flour and milk.

Cut layers in half horizontally.

Frost just tops of all four layers.
